Okunojima War Memorial

< Gas Weaponry >

Went to the Okunojima Island yesterday. It is very famous for being the production site of gas weaponry from the turn of 20th century until the end of WWII.

After the Japanese army surrendered to the US forces the island was de-militarized and decommissioned of all her fire power and production facilities. Nowadays the island is a museum itself and it is also a wild life sanctuary (although only rabbits are seen in abundance) that attracts tourists from all over Japan.

The island was wiped off the map during the days when it was used to produce poisonous gas. However it has since returned to the map after the Japanese lost the war and all weapons were destroyed.

I hope no one would have to suffer from this kind of weapon in the future anymore. Actually, I hope no one would suffer from war anymore, although I know it is not going to happen...

Cheers,
CK
