First Time Going On A Camping Ride!!

To camp during a ride has always been one of the things on my bucket list.

I admit there is some romantic value in it that blinds me from seeing the real side of camping, which I imagine it could be hard, harsh, dirty and uncomfortable. However, still, i would like to go camping, on my motorcycle, for one practical reason --- I am going on the Long Way Round ride! I will end up camping somewhere so might as well start piling up experience as early as I could.

So here I am, bought some gears that I think is essential for a newbie to learn how to get into camping.

A ground sheet that measures 190cm x 190cm.

A silver mat to put under the sleeping bag to smooth out the ground.

Well, a folding chair.

Sleeping bag meant for 12 degree celsius and above.

An aluminium folding table. I think this is a bit too low to use with the chair.

A gas burner.

And a one touch tent!

Seriously I have no idea what I am doing or to be doing. This is my first trial and error is all I can say.
Can someone please give me some advice?? thank you!

Cheers.

  2. Hey, I like your blog. I've been following it from the F700gs Facebook page. As far as camping goes I can give you some advice. Skip the sleeping matt and pick up a therma-rest or similar product. The smaller the better. The tent ground sheet is nice to have but probably not needed. Most tents now have reinforced bottoms that can tolerate rough ground without getting ripped. The aluminum table pictured probably wont be great with how low it is. I would look at MSR or a taller folding table. With the tent Im guessing a one-touch is one of the "fast" setup tents. These usually aren't great for a couple reasons. They weigh more than most tents, they don't tolerate wind as well, and if one pole breaks the whole thing is ruined. I would suggest a North Face Storm Break 1 or 2 depending on the size you want. The setup is really fast, they are very waterproof, and can handle wind. I've been using it for years, and camp upwards of 50 days a year in it. Good luck.

    1. Hi BMO! Thanks or liking my blog. And thanks for the advice! I just came back this morning from last night's camp. It was only a short one-night camp, but i enjoyed it very much and already learned something from it. And yes I can reflect totally to your advice. My tent is exactly one of those one-touch set up tent. I want to stick with it a little more to see how things go, but definitely i will check into the North Face. 50 days in a year!! Wow how do you manage to squeeze so much time into camping?

  3. Looks like you're getting lots of experience. Glad you're enjoying it. The more you camp the more you will figure out the little things. I work as firefighter for forest fires. So lots of camping. Just rode my 700gs today with my new touratech seat. Really like it. Have you thought about an aftermarket seat for all the long rides you have planned?

    1. Hi there! Yes I am definitely getting lots of experience that I didn't imagine I would in the past. It helps to have a clear vision and goal to be doing this. I enjoy all of it though. The stock seat is horrible (mine is an extra low seat) and I really want to change it to something plusher. However I couldn't bring myself to doing it because I am quite vertically challenged at 5-4, being to reach the ground gives me more confidence. Any suggestion of something thin and firm but still comfy?
